If you're a regular reader, then parts of this story may seem familiar to you. The reason for that is because it's a greatly expanded version of my short story: "Miles Past Xanadu" (Provided here, free of charge). This is my first full-length Solarpunk novel, and at this point it's the first in a planed series; though it will work just fine as a stand-alone.
In writing this story, the hardest part was the plot, because the world-building came so easily in comparison. I knew where I wanted this world to go. Starting my protagonist Dana in a place that was the exact opposite to the world I was building seemed the natural way to contrast/compare.
In sci-fi, there’s a long history of life imitating art. For that reason, the world we imagine is a very important step. Solarpunk is the Anti-Mad-Max. It's a roar of defiance to the people who see the future as inevitable catastrophe, violence, and dystopia. If I can make a future that’s hopeful, and a world that’s focused on making things better seem realistic to my readers, then the Stories of Arcadia will have served their purpose.
Without needing politics, without needing weapons, without needing excessive wealth; the future can be something hopeful.
